The cost of flowers doubles a week or two before Valentines Day. So here are some alternative gifts to give that won’t turn your checkbook red:
Bake or buy heart shaped cookies and package them in a red basket or red plastic wrap.
Buy a chocolate rose or two and add baby’s breath or other inexpensive greenery. If you buy the chocolate roses at the grocery store you can probably get the florist to wrap it up with the baby’s breath. If baby’s breath is too expensive ask the florist what the cheapest greenery is.

So one of the ways to prevent being a victim of robbery or assault while you are traveling is to not look like a tourist. How does one do this? Mobil Communications recently surveyed its phone subscribers and came up with these suggestions. Here they are:
Ditch the white athletic shoes: White athletic shoes scream “Look at me! I’m an American tourist!”
Ditch the fanny pack: A Mobal survey participant says “I’ve never seen a non-American wearing a fanny pack.”

Here is some handy advice I found in our paper from a local shoe repair shop:
Save yourself pain and money by choosing shoes with leather rather than vinyl lining and soles. “If you buy cheap you’ll get cheap” says the owner of the shop. Vinyl shoes do not allow your feet to breathe like leather and it doesn’t last as long.
