Organize your money – A lot of people get into trouble because they don’t keep track of spending. Americans throw away $75 billion of food each year with the average American family tossing 14 to 33 percent of the food they buy. That’s almost $600.00 of wasted grocery dollars per family per year. Learning the meanings of terms “best before”, “use by” and “sell by” dates on the products in your grocery store will help you avoid wasting food. Here is a quick guide:

The important thing to remember, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture is that shelf life has to do with consuming the product while it is at it’s peak, when you are most likely to enjoy it, while expiration dates are all about food safety.

“Use by” or “best before” are a guide to optimum enjoyment of the product. So you can actually use the product long past those dates and it is perfectly safe to consume. Sell by dates are the manufacturer’s guideline to grocery stores, so their products are placed on the shelves when they’re the most desirable. If a food has a true expiration or discard after date, that means you really have to throw it away because the product will be unsafe to consume.

Non food items don’t usually come with a date but many should be replaced after a certain time. Here are some guidelines:

Toothbrush – Buy a new one every three to four months or after you have been sick since the old one can have bacteria that can reinfect you.

Mascara – Replace every three months to avoid pink eye or sties.

Lipstick - You can keep this for two to three years, but if the color changes or it smells bad, toss it.

Sunscreen – Chemicals in sun block decompose, making it ineffective after a year.

Surge protector on your computer - Most standard surge protectors will last around five years. However, if the indicator light has gone out or it is flickering, better to replace a $20.00 surge protector than a $2000.00 computer.

Razor – Change your razor blade or toss your disposable razor after three or four uses, as nicks can allow bacteria to penetrate your skin.

Shower loofah - Change every three to four weeks. Mesh puffs can be used for eight weeks.

Make Your Own Eye Glass Cleaner

Just saw this in Hints from Heloise. You can use gentle dish washing detergent as an eye glass lens cleaner. Just squirt a little bit on each lens and rub in with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. You can also use hand sanitizer as an eye glass lens cleaner.

To make a holder for your glasses at night or any time use a potholder. You just fold the pot holder in half, stitch up the bottom and one side. You can use a very brightly colored one and you will never have trouble finding your glasses in the morning.

Natural Remedies for Pollen Allergies

Allergies are a really annoying problem for so many people. Allergy medication can be expensive as can allergy shots.  There are some very inexpensive things you can do for pollen allergy prevention:

1. Keep your doors and windows closed during peak season so pollen stays outside.

2. Use allergen-proof pillows and mattress protectors to avoid dust mites, and wash you bedding in hot water once a week. Wash hands when you come in from the outside and change your clothes when you come inside if you have spent a long time outside during heavy pollen times.

3. Bathes pets frequently and keep them out of bedrooms of those who have pollen allergies.

4. Dust and vacuum at least weekly. Have a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.

5. Buy a HEPA filter for your bedroom; it will help remove particles from the air that can be irritating. These can be a bit expensive but well worth a good nights sleep.

How Much Is Rental Car Insurance

Whenever you rent a car, you always encouraged to purchase the collision damage waiver to eliminate your liability for the deductible or any uninsured losses to which the rental car agency is exposed. The usual fee is $9.00 a day.

Make sure you check with your credit card company to see if you have car rental insurance option and check with your insurance company to find out how much your policy covers when you rent a car.

There are two reasons you may want to purchase the rental car insurance from your car rental agency:

1. Your auto insurance policy does not cover you for amounts the rental company charges you for the money it loses while the car you damaged is out of service.

2. Your insurance company may not reimburse the rental car agency quickly enough to satisfy them and the rental agency will insist on immediate payment from you if you did not buy the agency’s insurance.

Healthy Hair Tips

Here are some great tips I found in the weekly column from Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen.  These tips will help your hair stay healthy and you will save money too because you will be using less hair products.

Skip shampoo – The natural oils produced by your scalp are moisturizing to your hair. Unless you’ve been working up a big sweat, wash you hair every two or three days. Other days, just rinse and massage your scalp with water, or water and conditioner.

Rinse promptly – After a day at the beach or pool, remove chlorine and saltwater which are drying to hair. You can get a head start at the pool or beach if you bring a can of club soda and pour it over your hair. My hairdresser taught me that one.

Avoid chemicals - Dyes and bleaches can cause hair to become fragile and prone to breakage. Avoid do-it-yourself products because they tend to be extra-damaging on the hair shaft.

Be gentle - Blot hair dry with a towel, skip heated irons and dryers, and use low heat if you must blow dry. Use a brush with smooth or rounded bristles.

Clean Air in Your Home

Studies by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) concluded that air pollution levels in many U.S. homes are three to five times higher than outside. Here are some cheap ways to improve the air quality in your home:

Ban smoking in your home - Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals, 200 of which are know poisons.

Keep pets outside – especially if you have someone with pet allergies. Bathe and groom your pet regularly to reduce pet dander, a common trigger for allergies.

Buy air filtering houseplants -  The rule of thumb is one plant per ten square yards of floor space. Here are the 10 plant varieties researchers have found most effective in purifying household air: Rubber Plant, Boston Fern, English Ivy, Peace Lily, Weeping Fig, Australian Sword Fern, Areca Palm, Reed Palm, Dwarf Date Palm, Janet Craig Dracaena.

Check A/C. unit filters – If your AC/heating unit uses replaceable filters, look for the highest-efficiency filtr that elinimates pet dander, dust, smoke, mold and other small particles and allergens from your air. The American Lung Association recommends using filters that meet its indoor air quality guidelines and has a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 10 or higher.

Health Magazine reports a new study reveals that if you are going to spend money, spending it on a day at the beach or a night out with friends rather than a new handbag is much better for your health. The research presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, show that the handbag is likely to lose its appeal much more quickly than the happy memories of get-togethers.
