When I mention save money at the grocery store the first thing that comes to mind is using coupons. Coupons are a great way to save money but that is not the only way to save money.  Here is a quick list of ways to save when  you shop for food.

1. Don’t go shopping hungry – I know it sounds silly but when you’re stomach is empty you tend to purchase more food than you need. Plus, you may purchase something to eat at the store instead of eating at home where it’s cheaper.

2. Check the specials in the weekly circular and plan accordingly – In our newspaper, grocery stores publish their specials on Wednesday. I shop on Sunday so I will look at the specials on Wednesday and keep that in mind when I am planning meals.

3. Plan meals – Try to think what you are going to have for dinner during the week. Most people don’t think about until they get home. If you plan ahead you can get everything you need for the week. You will save on gas and groceries. Every time you visit the grocery stoe there is a chance you will buy unneeded items so if you can keep your trip down to once a week you minimize you opportunity to spend uneeded dollars.

4. Shop with a list – Shopping with a list helps in so many ways. Ofcourse this assumes you remember to bring your lst and don’t lose it while you are shopping. First, you don’t forget things you need and therefore won’t have to make extra trips to the store. Second, you are less likely to buy impulse items. Third, if you shop with a partner you can simply tear the list in half and get your shopping done twice as fast. Finally, you can put asteriks or whatever kind of mark you choose to denote which items you have coupons for.

5. Use re-usable bags – At our store you can buy canvas type bags and the store gives you a six cent credit for each bag you use. Even if you don’t get a credit, you can save our enviornment.
