Driving a car that is classifed as “safe” will give you lower annual auto insurance premiums. If you want to find out if the car you own or the car you want to buy is a “safe” car, there is a place you can find out. The safety ratings of a vehicles can be found at the Highway Loss Data Institute. They list a car’s safety records, based on its make, model, and year.
The Highway Loss Data Institute and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (www.hldi.org) every year publish a summary of the current model year’s safest vehicles by category. They have several categories for rating starting with “good” for the safest and ending with poor for the least safe. These ratings are based on performance in high-speed front and side crash tests and evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts.
