Frugal living doesn’t mean doing without, it simply means doing more with what you have. You can make things that you already have do double duty and that will save money. Here are some great new frugal living tips concerning new uses for hand lotion.

1. Get rid of winter clothing static - Put a small amount on you hands and rub them over your clothing or pantyhose.

2. Polish shoes – In a pinch, a little bit of lotion buffed with a cloth salves the leather and makes shoes shine.

3. Moisturize under your gloves – Store a tube of it near your gloves (gardening, rubber or regular winter) and smooth some onto your hands every time you put them on. You can also put lotion on your hands before you go to bed and wear cotton gloves.

4. Get rid of frizz - Spread a little over fingertips (not directly on hair) and scrunch your fingers through the frizz.

5. Shave – Lotion can be used to shave your legs and as a bonus your legs stay moisturized afterward.

Here are three more new frugal living tips:

1. If you want to get that last little bit of lotion out of the bottle, just add a small amount of water and shake the bottle. You can also do this with shampoo and conditioner bottles.

2. You can dilute your lotion, shampoo and conditioner with water with out comprising its effectiveness. When the bottle gets halfway empty, simply refill the empty portion with water or herbal tea and shake it up. If you use an expensive shampoo the cost gets cut in half.

3. You can also make your own shampoo by mixing 1 tablespoon baking soda and 1 cup warm water. Put the mixture into a spray bottle and spray on hair. Work the mixture through your hair. Let it sit for about 60 seconds. Rinse out with cool water or two tablespoons apple cider vinegar mixed per cup of water.

Cheap Easy Dessert Recipes

Here is an easy and inexpensive recipe to prepare from Family Circle Magazine. The main ingredients are butter, sugar, flour, peanut butter, oats and chocolate chips. Usually things you already have around the house. Plus peanut butter and oats are healthy.

It is quick to prepare – only 15 minutes. Just remember to take your butter out an hour or so before because it needs to be soft.

If you want to save time use parchment paper or non-stick foil to line your pan.

Swirl Bars – makes 16 bars

1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), softened

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all purpose flour

1 cup quick oats

1/4 teaspoon salt

6 ounces semisweet chocolate chips

Icing:

1 cup confectioners sugar

1/4 peanut butter

3 tablespoons milk

Instructions:

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 13×9x2 inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.

2. In large bowl, beat the butter, sugars, peanut butter and vanilla until smooth.

3. In a second bowl whisk together flour, oats and salt. On low speed, beat flour mixture into butte mixture until just combined. Press dough into prepared pan. Evenly sprinkle chocolate chips on top.

4. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from oven.

5. Make Icing: In a medium sized bowl, blend confectioners’ sugar. peanut butter and milk until smooth. Pour icing over the uncut bars while still warm and swirl chips with icing. Cool completely in pan and cut into 16 bars.

>Homemade Clay Mask

You can get a great facial at home and it will only take you about 15 minutes. You probably have all the ingredients in your pantry.

This facial will help prevent wrinkles and make your skin smooth and clean. Family Circle magazine had some great at home spa ideas and I added a few of my own. Plus the only items you might have to buy are sea salt and fullers earth (clay for mask).

You can get sea salt at your local grocery store for less than two dollars. Look in the baking aisle or the health food aisle. There are some expensive brands but also some very reasonable brands.

Step 1 – Fill the bathroom skin with hot water. Drape a bath towel over your head – it helps concentrate the steam – and lean over the basin just enough so you feel the heat on your face. Do this for about five minutes to add moisture and help open pores. More at home spa ideas – add a few lemon peels or orange peels or rose petals if you have them to the water to add a nice scent or use your favorite essential oil.

Step 2 -Starting with the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) which is where blackheads most commonly occur, smooth on an exfoliating scrub in small, circular motions to help unclog pores. Extend the scrub outward to cheeks and down to the neck to refine all over.

One of my at home spa ideas is to use Cetaphil mixed with sea salt for an exfoliating scrub. Cetaphil is a very mild cleanser that does not require water to work. You can get the generic brand at any grocery store or drug store.

Step 3 Dab eye cream under eyes and around the corners of the mouth (it works on fine lines there too). Follow with a clay-based mask to draw out impurities: the eye cream keeps those delicate areas from getting dry or tight. Rinse after five minutes and follow with moisturizer.

Homemade Clay Mask

3 – 4 tablespoons whole milk
2 tablespoons clay (Green or French Clay also called Fullers Earth)
1 teaspoon honey

I know milk seems like an odd ingredient but the lactic acid in the milk (alpha hydroxy acid) helps slough off dead skin cells.The clay helps draw out impurities from your skin and the honey is a natural healer. Honey has high prophylactic properties that help to halt or control the aging process, and because of its high vitamin and potassium contents, it nourishes the skin, promotes moisture retention, prevents and erases wrinkles.

Instructions for Homemade Clay Mask

Mix the ingredients together adding more milk or water if the mask is too dry. Apply evenly to face (and neck if you want) avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 15 minutes or until dry and rinse off with warm water.

Hair Coloring Tips At Home

Getting your hair colored at a salon can be expensive. Home hair coloring kits have really improved over the years and now it is easier than ever to dye your hair at home. Even if you make a mistake you can always go to a salon to get it fixed. Here are some good tips for at home hair coloring I found in Woman’s Day magazine. I did try the chapstick around the face and it really did keep the dye from soaking into my skin.

Old t-shirt – Wear one

Trash bags – Line the bathroom floor with a garbage bag in case of drips or spills.

Baby toothbrush - If the applicator bottle gets messy you can use one to gently stroke color onto fine hairs around your face.

Chapstick - Swipe it around your hairline before you begin to prevent forehead stains. The stick makes it super easy to apply.

Kitchen sponge - Hair color can be thick and goopy, but a damp porous sponge helps distribute color evenly.

Sweet n low packets – If your scalp gets itchy, throw in the color and shake it up. Colorists swear by this to lessen irritation but it has to be that brand Splenda or it won’t work.

How to Fix dye damage

Too Dark - Wash with a clarifying shampoo – it lifts away dirt and oil, so it can help lift color. Or mix equal parts clear shampoo and peroxide; shake in applicator bottle, apply and leave on hair 3-5 minutes to lighten slightly.

Too light – Go up one shade darker than your original formula. Pour half of the dye out and fill with water (to lower the volume of peroxide) Apply to hair and leave on for no more than five minutes. General rule: Only two processes in a day max.

Stained forehead - Traditional hair color removers can be harsh on sensitive skin. Instead, swipe on an astringent like good old Sea Breeze to take off color.

Make Your Own Eye Glass Cleaner

Just saw this in Hints from Heloise. You can use gentle dish washing detergent as an eye glass lens cleaner. Just squirt a little bit on each lens and rub in with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. You can also use hand sanitizer as an eye glass lens cleaner.

To make a holder for your glasses at night or any time use a potholder. You just fold the pot holder in half, stitch up the bottom and one side. You can use a very brightly colored one and you will never have trouble finding your glasses in the morning.

Care for Colored Hair

Summer can be really hard on color-treated hair especially the red tones. UV rays, chlorine and washing more frequently all take their toll on your color. How to keep hair color from fading? There are actually several things you can do and none of them are very expensive.

Use sulfate free shampoo – They are a lot less likely to strip your color. Coloress Moisture Shampoo is only $8.00. Worth it if you consider how much you paid to have your hair colored. Even if you color your hair yourself you can still save because the longer your color lasts the less time and money you have to spend on hair coloring.

Give your hair more moisture – give your hair an intense moisture session at least once a week. Check beauty supply stores for inexpensive intense moisture treatments. The staff is usually knowledgeable about the products and can find something in your price range.

Use sunscreen – just like your skin your hair needs sunscreen. Look for products with UV filters to keep hair color from fading. (Garnier Fructis’ Color Shield ($4 to $6) is not too expensive). The cheapest solution is to wear a hat. Wearing a hat will also help protect your eyes and delicate skin on your face.

Shine on - Pros recommend an in-shower treatment to restore luster. Again, check the beauty supply store in your area. I really like Sally’s Beauty Supply and a lot of professionals shop there too.

Rinse hair after exposing to chlorine – If you swim in chlorinated water then rinse your hair as soon as possible. This will help keep hair color from fading. My hair stylist said club soda is very good at removing the chlorine. You can bring a can or two with you in your beach bag and just pour it over your hair when you are done swimming.

Cheap Pretty Prom Dresses

Spring is here and birds are cheeping but they are not the only ones. The rest of us are looking for cheap cheap prom dresses. Turns out this year we are in luck. You know all those great dresses you saw at the Academy Awards? You can find good copies of many of those dresses at your local stores and the prices are reasonable.

At Kohl’s, the brand My Michelle’s one-shoulder gown looks very close to the one worn by reality star Kim Kardashian and it is only $99.00. Many of the styles out in department stores today are patterned after celebrities dresses but without the celebrity price tag. J.C. Penny has a dead ringer in their Jump Apparel brand for Sandra Bullock’s purple princess gown she wore at the Golden Globe Awards for about $200.00 and David’s Bridal has the short version for 99.00. Now those are some cheap cheap prom dresses but if you need to go cheaper check out T.J. Maxx, Ross Dress for Less and Marshalls. I know girls who have found great dresses for less $30.00 or less.

Prom fashion experts say the most important fashion trend you should follow is to choose a look that makes you feel great. If you feel elegant and beautiful in a dress, then that is the right dress for you. A feeling of confidence does wonders for your appearance.

That said, here are the latest trends for prom this year. Shiny either with sequins or metallic fabric is big this year. Other trends include dresses with corset or bustier details, dresses in bright colors and jeweled details. If you can’t afford the jeweled details, you can always add a few of your own. If you can sew on a button, you can find some jeweled buttons or adornments at the fabric store and sew them on yourself. Strapless dresses are also popular this year.

How to accessorize for prom? Accessorize a solid-color dress with a stand-out necklace, jeweled handbag and strappy heels or instead of a bold necklace try some killer earrings. Bold chunky bracelets and peep toe stilettos are also being worn this year.

For guys, the popular look this year is rocker inspired, with black jacket and shirt and a colorful tie (in orange, purple or teal).

Spring is here and with it comes beautiful flowers and nice weather. Unfortunately, bugs and pests come too. If you know a something about the helpful bugs that visit or live in your yard or garden, you can save money on pest control. I am talking about natures best pest control – bugs themselves. Not only do you not have to worry about getting rid of these bugs but natures best pest control bugs will work to eliminate bad bugs in your garden.

Sometimes you need to exterminate and other times to let the insects do what they do best – eat other insects. If the insect is damaging your plant then yes, you must get rid of it but if it is a helpful bug that eats other insects, put out the welcome sign.

Sometimes the pests can be picked, washed or vacuumed off plants to control infestations. If you pull weeds on a regular basis you are engaging in one of natures best pest controls.

Here are some bugs that can actually eat bad bugs in your garden…

Centipedes – may look scary buy they feed on slugs and a variety of small insect pests.

Ground beetle – eat slug eggs and babies, plus other soil-dwelling pests.

Hornets and yellow jackets – are effective predators. However, if you are allergic or the hornets and yellow jackets are aggressive you need to get rid of them.

Lace wings – and all their alligator-like larvae eat aphids, scales, motes, caterpillars and other pests.

Lady beetle or lady bug – besides being really cute to look at, their larvae and adult bugs feed on soft-bodied insects such as aphids, mealybugs, scale insects.

Here is an extra tip I just discovered. If you have fire ant piles on your driveway, you can use regular bleach to destroy to them. The bleach kills the red ants and any weeds growing in the cracks.
