Can’t Find Cheap Gas Prices? Save Money Gassing Up Anyway.
Uncle Sam Finds Cheaper Gas
Did you know that the US Government Department of Energy publishes a website to help you save money on gas and find cheap gas prices? The website publishes fuel economy tips, car fuel economy comparisons, and links to websites with cheap gas listings in local areas! You can also find out which alternative fuel or hybrid cars will help you earn tax credits. As an aside, I have found a lot of great websites that are published by the federal government lately on all sorts of topics, and am glad to see my tax dollars going for something like this!
Driving Tips To Improve Any Car’s Fuel Economy
Follow the expert’s good advice. Make sure your tires are inflated properly. Also make sure that your car’s air and fuel injection system are as clean as possible. We have heard reports that the bottles of fuel injection cleaners from a discount store may not do the trick, so do consult a trusted mechanic. Also, remove any external fixtures like luggage racks when you are not using them. They will increase the weight and drag on your car when you drive. One less obvious tip I have gotten is that it may be more fuel efficient to use the air conditioner or heater than to drive around with the windows open because of increased drag.
Grocery Store Cards and Gas Discounts
Another thing to look for are store discount cards. I know that my local grocery store always credits a 3 cent a gallon discount with every fill up at their gas station. Every time I spend $100 at the grocery store, which is fairly often these days, they credit me with a 10 cent a gallon discount too! In fact, when I think about it, I probably qualify for a 10 cent a gallon discount just about every time I need to fill up! It is really worth it to use that gas station when possible.
Ten cents may not seem like much, but if I fill up my tank once a week, that saves me about $6 a month without any extra trouble. We cheapskates have to look at things that way. $6 a month means $72 a year!
Can You Lose the Commute?
Now I am lucky because I am able to work from my home, so I don’t put as many miles on my car as I used to do when I commuted to work. If you have an opportunity to cut back on your commuting, even if you have to accept less money, it is something to consider these days. Obviously, you can save time, wear on your vehicle, and money on fuel by driving less! That can be worth a few hundred dollars a month.
Get On The Bus!
If losing your commute is not an option, it may be time to reconsider alternative transportation. A car or van pool, the city bus, or a commuter train may look more attractive then they used to. When I did commute, I actually enjoyed the city bus ride because it gave me time to read or visit with other regulars who became my “bus friends”.
