 Affordable Pet Care Tips

You love your cat and your dog but they can cost you a fortune. It costs approximately $670 a year for the average dog and $540 for the average cat. How can you save money and still care for your pet properly.

As with children, pets benefit most from preventive care. Take your dog or cat for regular exams. Problems that are detected early are much less expensive to treat. Shots at the vet can be expensive though. Contact your local Humane Society and find out if they offer low-cost vaccines. The same goes for spaying and neutering. You can save as much as 50% at a spay and neuter clinic. You may have to drive a distance and the appointment times may be less convenient but the savings are worth it. Keep your eyes open too, sometimes local vets or local agencies will hold vaccine or spay and neuter clinics at a location near you.

Prevention also applies to your home. Many houseplants and plants that are quite beautiful to look at in your yard are poisonous to animals. Take an inventory of what you’ve got and find out if it is lethal to your pet. When you buy a new plant you can ask the nursery person if it is poisonous or you can look it up online. Inside your home make sure toxic materials are safely stored where you pet can not reach them.

Keep your dog or cat at a good weight. Overweight dogs and cats have more orthopedic problems and are more susceptible to diabetes, heart disease and other medical problems.

Research pet food and find out what is the best buy for the money. You may ask your veterinarian or go online and do your own research. The cheapest is not always the most money saving. Some brands may be hard on your dog or cat’s digestive system or cause allergic reactions. You can save money too by buying in bulk. Make sure though you store the food in an airtight container. Rodents and insects are quite fond of pet food.
