Here are some tips which will help keep out of your doctors office and away from the pharmacy. Best way to save money is to avoid spending. No one likes paying for expensive doctor visits or high priced medicine. There are times when you simply can’t avoid this expense but there is a lot you can do on your own to stay healthy.

Give blood – I know it sounds crazy but a recent long-term study of more than a million Scandanavian blood donors showed giving blood was found to be linked with a lower rate of cancer (liver, lung, colon, stomach, and throat) in men, with risk dropping as blood donation increased. Women don’t despair, you will get a mini-check-up when you give blood. They take your blood pressure and determine the iron level in your blood. That is how I found out I was slightly anemic. I was not able to give the first time because my iron levels were not high enough. I was told to go home and eat my spinach.

Wash your hands – I know you have heard it a million times but it bears repeating a million more. Washing your hands frequently is one of the best ways to protect yourself from infectious diseases. Many infections are transmitted by touching things – door knobs, other people’s hands (reminder – if someone has a cold – don’t shake hands), stair rails, telephones and desktops. Hand-washing is important for everyone no matter what age, especially children. A 2005 study showed that hand-washing cut children’s risk of pneumonia and diarrhea in half. Use hand sanitizer if soap is not available.

Drive less – Recent research from both Harvard and the University of Alabama at Birmingham found a drop in traffic fatalities with the rise in gas prices and predicted that 1000 lives per month could be saved each month if gas prices stayed at $4.00 or above per gallon. Driving can also make you very tense and tension is never good for the body. Sustained tension leads to all sorts of expensive health problems.

Get your rest -Over half of American adults experience some difficulty sleeping or don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis. Sleep disorders have been linked with serious health problems such as high blood pressure and heart attacks. Sleep eprivation may also make you gain weight. While it’s best to get the required amount (7 to 8 hours) of sleep every night, you can make up for lost sleep by taking a quick nap or sleeping in on weekends. If you feel you have insomnia you might try an non-addictive natural sleep aide.

Eat fish - There few things you can eat that are as good for you as fish. Eating fish just twice a week may reduce the risk of heart attack or sudden cardiac death, and eating fish more than once a month may reduce the risk of stroke. The American Heart Association recommends eating oily fish at least twice a week. It is best to eat smaller fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring or sardines. Avoid fried fish because of unhealthy fats found in fried foods. Chunk light tuna (which is much less costly than albacore) is good because of its healthy fat content and because it typically has lower mercury levels than albacore or tuna steaks.

Try to avoid antibiotics - If you’re suffering from a head cold, sinus infection, earache, bronchitis or the flu, don’t try to make your doctor give you antibiotics. In some cases, antiobiotics have negative effects. A study reported in Clinical Infectious Diseases estimated that 142,000 emergency-room visits each year are due to adverse reactions to antibiotics. Reactions range from rashes to life-threatening allergic reactions. I, myself am allergic to two different types of antibiotics. Fortunately, I had the rash not the life threatening allergic reaction.  For the common cold, flu, and many minor infections such as bronchitis, antibiotics don’t seem to help. Overuse and overprescription of antibiotics also has led to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria that have become a serious public health concern, especially in hospitals.

Get your shots - Keep current on immunizations. If you haven’t had a tetnus shot in the last ten years you will need one. New vaccines also have become available, such as the shingles vaccine and human papillomavirus vaccine and the flu shot. Shots like the pneumonia vaccine and the annual flu vaccine have been shown to prevent potentially serious infections.

Get screened - Avoid putting off important screening tests like a colonoscopy, PAP smear and mammagram, bone density test, blood pressure, cholesterol, and other blood work.

Question your meds and supplements - Many medications cause digestive symptoms such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea and heartburn. If a change in your diet doesn’t improve your digestive health, ask your doctor or pharmacist if your medications could be causing side effects. Even some supplements and vitamins can cause side effects. For instance calcium supplements often cause constipation and magnesium and vitamin C can cause loose stools and diarrhea. Try eliminating the supplement or if you take more than one, try eliminating one the supplements per week to see if they might be contributing to digestive problems.
