The cost of flowers doubles a week or two before Valentines Day. So here are some alternative gifts to give that won’t turn your checkbook red:

Bake or buy heart shaped cookies and package them in a red basket or red plastic wrap.

Buy a chocolate rose or two  and add baby’s breath or other inexpensive greenery. If you buy the chocolate roses at the grocery store you can probably get the florist to wrap it up with the baby’s breath. If baby’s breath is too expensive ask the florist what the cheapest greenery is.

Bake heart shaped brownies – you can buy individual or large foil heart shaped pans around Valentine’s Day at the grocery store.

Coffee or tea mug with heart pattern – You can find these in craft stores, party supply stores and even the grocery store. They are usually pretty cheap. Fill the mug with chocolates or a sample size package of coffee or bags of tea that comes in a red package.

Collection of inexpensive red or pink nail polish packed in a red or pink gift bag. You can get cheap gift bags at the dollar and the drug store (they look like lunch bags but are decorated)

Buy an inexpensive plant with a red or pink flower. Cyclamens are a cold weather annual that has red, pink or purple blooms. They can be grown indoors and out. Also African violets are pretty too and have pink or purple blooms.

A collection of inexpensive scrunchies in red, pink or purple - the dollar store also has a good selection of cheap scrunchies.

Heart shaped earrings – The drugstores sometimes sell these and Claire’s also.

A tiny book of poems - The bookstores always have those little books with poems and such in them.

Heart shaped picture frame – buy or make one and put a picture of you wearing something red in it.

Red licorice wrapped up in pretty tissue paper - If your valentine is a red licorice lover, they will love this gift.

Red colored CD with your valentine’s favorite songs
