Here are some great tips that appeared in Parade Magazine:
Brighten a Front Door
It only takes one quart of primer and one quart of regular paint plus a quart of brass polish for the door-knob to improve the look of your front door. Use a warm color like deep red and for an accent, fill a tall planter with fresh rosemary plant and surround the rosemary with English ivy. Rosemary plants are inexpensive and hardy plus they give off a nice scent.
Do not paint the door the same color as the surrounding trim. Choose a contrasting, bright accent color.
Apply three coats of paint for best color and durability.
The planter should be at least two feet high and its color should not match the door.

Bring Color to a Dark Bathroom
Use bold colors such and lime and aqua. For accent pieces, think big: try a two-foot vase filled with tall artificial green leaves.
Increase all light-bulb wattage.
Stack folded towels on a shelf or in a basket for a neat, plush look.
Buy and minimum of two towels in each size.

Update Your Bedroom
Try new sheet and pillow cases and a matching bed skirt to add color and hide an ugly metal frame. Throw pillows will give your bed a bright and cheerful new look. The wall behind the bed can be dressed up with two king-size sheets and a wooden drapery pole. Just sew a pocket at the top and bottom of the sheets, thread the pole through the top and attach to the ceiling, and push a simple rod through the bottom to attach at baseboard behind the bed. You get a nice headboard and when it gets dusty you can throw it in the wash.
Solid colors or striped sheets work best.
Limit color scheme to two colors.
Hang a mirror opposite a window to reflect light.
