Can this be a throwback to my youth, and the advent of cars you could drive for less than $2,500? Well, since I am getting middle aged, I can remember a lot of cars that you could buy for this side of $10k, and that was after I had a driver’s license. However, I have to admit it has been awhile since I’ve seen anything that would really be called a servicABLE vehicle for less than that!
However India’s Tata Motors has announced a new car that can be purchased for 100,000 rupees, or about $2,500. It actually seats 5 in a tight squeeze, and according to Tat, is environmentally sound and safe. Now if you want any luxuries, like air conditioning, you have to buy a higher level of the car which will cost a bit more. Of course, these cars are only available in India now, so don’t expect to see them running down the roads in the US — Yet!
However, this car make wake up other auto brands to produce a less expensive, basic car. Can it be done in the US? Maybe the status symbol of the future will not be a mega-expensive Lexus or Hummer, but an environmentally friendly and frugal car like a Tata. I wish I could get me one!
