With rising fuel costs and uncertain employment prospects, it is more important than every to put some money aside for a rainy day! My parents always told me that the important thing was not how much you earned, but how much you saved, and the older I get, the more I see how true this is.
Do Not Buy Things You Do Not Need or Will Not Use - I know that this sounds obvious, but I cannot tell you how many times I impulsively purchased a tool or food item that I found tucked away in a drawer or pantry months laters. Of course, this point leads into the next one….
Get Rid Of Clutter - How will cleaning out clutter help you? Well, for one thing you will realize that you already have 3 hammers and six garlic presses. Maybe some of that clutter could stock a garage sale or EBay sale? Besides, recent studies have shown that clutter can increase depression. Hey, I’m not preaching. Clutter is my life! But I am trying to do better.
Pay Yourself First - Set a savings goal and put that money aside every month. If you have some sort of savings or retirement plan that automatically drafts your account or paycheck, you will be more likely to stick to this goal. If you do not, just determine that your goal is to set aside X amount of dollars every month. If you don’t hit that goal every month, do not look back, but try to make it up in the next few months.
Write Down Your Bills, and then analyze them - Use a spreadsheet or a scrap of an old envelope, but just write down all the bills you have to pay each month. Then see just how much you have left over for entertainment or luxuries or savings. Is there anything you can cut out of this? Maybe that phone bill, internet bill, and tv cable bill can be combined into a bundle that will save money. Maybe your family’s cell phones can be combined into a family plan. Maybe those insurance policies should be looked at, and you can find cheaper car insurance somewhere else. If you can knock $50 a month out of your budget, that is $600 a year! Start small for big savings!
Reduce Debt, especially unsecured Debt on Credit Cards - Can you imagine how much more money you would have every month if you were not servicing credit card debt? If you have ever carried credit card debt, you know how frustrating it is to pay your bill every month, only to find that most of the money goes to interest.
